Bentley Bridge Shopping Park: Particularly inside busy store queues and crowded retail shops.

Heath Town Markets: High-footfall open areas where shoppers are easily distracted.

Public Transport: During peak commute times on local buses and at Wolverhampton station.

Recommended Protection Tactics

To block proximity "ghost tapping" devices and terminal skimmers, the local policing team recommends three immediate actions:

Use RFID-Blocking Sleeves: Keep cards in individual metal-lined sleeves or an RFID-shielded wallet to completely block radio signals.

The "Card Sandwich" Method: If you do not have an RFID wallet, place your contactless card directly between two non-contactless cards (such as an ID card and a plastic supermarket loyalty card) to scramble incoming reader signals.

Switch to Mobile Wallets: Use Apple Pay or Google Pay on your phone. They are significantly safer because they require active biometric authentication (Face ID or fingerprint) and do not broadcast actual card numbers to nearby proximity devices.

If you spot an unauthorized charge, use your banking app to freeze the card immediately and file a report via the Action Fraud online portal or call 0300 123 2040.
